The concept of creating the first online Royal Military Police Association (RMPA) Branch was both revolutionary and necessary, given the geographical dispersal of many former Members of RMP. The Republic of Ireland Branch aimed to provide a platform that could transcend physical boundaries and time zones, to bring together comrades who share a strong bond forged through service.
Background:
Traditionally, veterans associations have relied on physical branches, with regular meetings fostering camaraderie and support. However, our community in Ireland faced a unique challenge: with limited former RMP in the country living in the country, the conventional model was not feasible. We needed a solution that could adapt to our circumstances without compromising the integrity and objectives of the Association.
The Challenge:
The challenge was to create a virtual branch that could replicate the benefits of a physical branch, offering a sense of belonging and an avenue for mutual support among veterans. We needed to maintain the essence of our gatherings, facilitate regular communication, and ensure that every member, regardless of location, could participate actively.
Vision and Execution:
Under the leadership and vision of our President & Co-Founder, Joe Sheppard, we embarked on pioneering a digital transformation. The goal was straightforward: to establish the first-ever virtual branch where distance was no longer a barrier to membership or participation.
Our strategy involved leveraging technology to create an online community that was both accessible and secure. We launched a private Facebook group, which became our daily meeting ground. This group allowed us to share stories, provide updates, and offer support at any hour of the day.
For formal meetings, including our monthly gatherings and Annual General Meeting (AGM), we used a private Virtual Studio. This platform enabled real-time interaction and offered features that closely mimicked the experience of in-person meetings. Weekly welfare “Shout Outs” checking on Members,LIVE “Meet the Members”, a series of virtual interviews and a host of other ideas brought us all closer.
Joe Sheppard played a crucial role in this digital venture. His technical acumen ensured that our virtual infrastructure was robust, user-friendly, and adaptable to the needs of our members. He also fostered an environment where every member could contribute to the group’s activities, regardless of their technical proficiency.
Outcomes:
The virtual branch concept was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Membership through a hugely successful recruitment and engagement process led by the Chairman & Committee grew rapidly as veterans from all corners of the globe joined our ranks. The ease of online interaction led to increased engagement, with members connecting more frequently than they might have at physical meetings.
Our annual highlight, the formal Dinner Night in Ireland, provided an opportunity for face-to-face interaction, complementing our online activities and reinforcing the bonds within our community.
